Berger-Marks group photoBerger-Marks logo

The Berger-Marks Foundation has awarded Fuerza Laboral a grant to support our work to organize and defend the rights of women workers. The Berger-Marks Foundation, whose mission is to help organize women into unions, provides both financial support and camaraderie to people and organizations doing that work. We are looking forward to deepening our work in this area with their help! To learn more about them, visit their website by clicking here.

Develop your Leadership Through Our Democracy School

Democracy School March 2014

Last Saturday (March 1) we held the first session of our 2014 Democracy School. The Democracy School is an annual leadership course designed to help our community to overcome our fears, build our power, and take action against abuses at the workplace. It is an opportunity for us to become powerful leaders who are not afraid to speak out. There will be four sessions during the month of March and a graduation for those who have attended 3 sessions or more.

It's not to late to sign up for the next three sessions! Call our office (401-725-2700) and talk to Phoebe Gardener for more information.

Session 1: Overcoming our fears and building our power. March 1, 2-5 PM. **Already took place**
Session 2: Building our leadership and taking action against workplace abuses. March 15, 2-5 PM

Fuerza's Best of 2013

It has been another great year at Fuerza Laboral, fighting for worker and immigrant rights in Rhode Island. We could not have done it without all of our wonderful members and allies - thank you! Here are some of the highlights.

 Shortchanged conference AWS Action cropped

Fuerza Laboral held a press conference at the State House announcing the release of our landmark study on the problem  of wage theft, “Shortchanged: A Study of Unpaid Wages in Rhode Island.”

Former American Waste Services workers hold an early morning action at 6am with 60 other Fuerza members and allies demanding their prevailing wages at the house of the company’s former owner, Mike Galvin.

Harol Labor day  Liders with George Nee

Fuerza leader Harol Lopez pushes for immigration reform and stronger worker rights protections outlined in the POWER Act at the Rhode Island Labor Day march and picket.

Members of our Campaign Against Wage Theft meet with RI AFL-CIO President George Nee to discuss holding the Department of Labor and Training and the Office of the Attorney General accountable for enforcing the new anti-wage theft laws Fuerza helped pass in 2012.

 Coalition with Ciccilline

Fuerza Laboral leaders Benildo Lux, Veronica Perez, their daughter and other We Are All Arizona coalition members meet with federal Congressman David Cicilline to push for immigration reform.

 Butterflies RIF

Justice for Immigrants program leader Enrique Herrera motivates Fuerza members to participate in actions for October 5th National Day of Reform and Respect.

Thank you for a successful celebration!

On Friday, November 8 over 150 people joined us at the Portuguese Club in Pawtucket. They enjoyed good food, good company, and live music by Colombian singer Aleyda Zapata. In particular, we wish to thank the following sponsors, whose generosity not only helped us to celebrate seven successful years of organizing for worker and immigrant rights; it also gave us the stability to look towards the future.
